Frequently Asked Questions - Solar PV Systems

Q1: Do solar panels need direct sunlight to work?
A1: No, solar panels can generate electricity in most daylight conditions. However, the more direct sunlight they receive, the more energy they produce.

Q2: How do I use the solar electricity in my home?
A2: Your system's inverter automatically prioritizes using solar electricity when there is demand in the home (e.g., when an appliance is on). If the solar power isn’t enough, additional electricity is seamlessly drawn from the grid. You don't need to do anything to manage this process.

Q3: What happens to unused solar electricity?
A3: Any surplus solar electricity is typically exported back to the grid. If you have a smart meter, you can sign up for a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff with your electricity supplier to get paid for the energy you export. Occasionally, the grid operator may limit export capacity in your area. In such cases, your system’s inverter may be programmed to shut off excess generation to prevent overloading the grid.

Q4: Can solar panels power my entire house?
A4: Not entirely. Solar panels help reduce your reliance on the grid but usually don’t cover all of your electricity needs—especially at night. Without battery storage, any solar power must be used immediately or it will be lost.

Q5: Will solar panels save me money?
A5: Yes! Solar panels can lower your electricity bills. Savings depend on your electricity rates, system size, and how well you use electricity during daylight hours. Maximize savings by running appliances like your washing machine or dishwasher during the day using timers.

Q6: Is the UK sunny enough for solar panels?
A6: Yes, the UK gets plenty of solar energy for home solar panels to be worthwhile, even on cloudy days. The UK receives a similar amount of solar energy as Germany, a global leader in solar power.

Q7: Is my roof suitable for solar panels?
A7: Homes with south-, east-, or west-facing roofs are ideal for solar panels. North-facing roofs receive less sunlight and are less efficient. A roof pitch between 20° and 50° is recommended.

Q8: Can I install panels on a north-facing roof?
A8: Yes, but it may reduce efficiency. Our experts can survey your home and advise on the best setup for maximum performance.

Q9: Can I install solar panels on a flat roof?
A9: Absolutely! Panels on flat roofs are usually tilted to capture more sunlight. They are often weighted down rather than fixed to avoid damaging the roof covering. It's essential that the roof is strong enough to support the additional weight. Sometimes, updating the roof covering is recommended for long-term durability.
